The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has urged traditional rulers across the South East to take an active role in preserving and promoting the region’s rich cultural heritage. He made this appeal during a one-day meeting of the South East Traditional Rulers Council, held at the JAAC Secretariat in Ogurube Layout, Umuahia.
Governor Otti stressed the significance of culture as a core part of a people’s identity. He expressed concern about internal conflicts within certain communities, where disputes over traditional leadership positions have led to the fracturing of family relationships. He highlighted the leadership of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, as an example of what traditional rulership should represent.
The governor also emphasized the temporary nature of power, describing leadership as an opportunity for service. He encouraged citizens to hold their leaders accountable, stating, “Leadership under my administration is rooted in service.” Governor Otti reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Abia without any personal agenda.
He thanked the South East Traditional Rulers Council for choosing Abia State as the host for their meeting, assuring them of the state’s warm hospitality. “A good leader must be a good listener and accountable to the people,” the governor added.
In his remarks, Eze E.C. Okeke, Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers Council and the Imo State Traditional Rulers Council, commended Governor Otti for his efforts to transform Abia State. He noted that the traditional rulers of the South East are proud of the governor’s achievements and his dedication to the development of the state. The council’s meeting addressed key issues affecting the region, and Eze Okeke praised the governor’s commitment to maintaining peace and security.
Additionally, Eze Linus Mbah, Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, and Eze Innocent Nwaigwe, Chairman of Umuahia North Council of Traditional Rulers, applauded Governor Otti for fostering strong relations between the state government and traditional institutions. They also emphasized that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would contribute to peace and stability in the South East region.
